Philip Riley is a Managing
Director of Bluescape Energy
Partners and Parallel Resource
Partners. Riley has 20+ years of
industry experience, including
direct involvement in the energy
industry during multiple down
cycles. Riley is responsible for formulating investment strategies, sourcing investment opportunities and managing existing investment operations and performance.
In his eight years at Bluescape and
Parallel, Riley has led more than $300
million of transactions across five
investments, as well as assisting the
team on numerous others. Most recently,
Riley led the execution of investments
in Deepwater Partners LLC, Derby
Exploration LLC, and Riley Exploration –
Permian, LLC. Riley was the architect of
several innovative transaction
structures that enabled a sufficient
margin of safety (through low entry
cost, capital structure preference,
decreased reliance on exits via sale and
other features) while retaining
significant upside optionality.
Riley serves on the board of directors of portfolio companies to oversee strategy, capital allocation, and performance management. Additionally, Riley serves as CFO of several Bluescape Resources’ upstream private equity investments (Nautilus Resources LLC, Alberta 1852797 ULC, and AleAnna Resources LLC), helping to lead strategy and create value through a variety of strategic and performance improvement initiatives.
Prior to Bluescape, Riley served as Senior Vice President at Imperial Capital, Vice President at Lazard, and as Analyst at Petrie Parkman in Houston. In such roles, Riley advised companies, private equity sponsors, hedge funds, lenders, and other creditors on over 45 consummated transactions in excess of $135 billion of value or restructured liabilities, with a focus on complex distressed and restructuring situations. During approximately ten years of restructuring advisory experience, Riley designed innovative structures for companies that provided defensive measures from creditors, in tandem with deleveraging exchange transactions that enabled sponsors to maintain control in underwater investments. Further, investors engaged Riley to advise on multiple distress for control transactions, including the full cycle from initial evaluation of opportunities to the identification and purchase of fulcrum securities through negotiation and execution of change of control transactions.
Riley earned a Bachelor’s in Business Administration from The University of Texas at Austin, with majors in the Business Honors Program and Finance. Riley is actively involved in the Houston business and social community.
